The weekend market is small, which is why I like it. There are perhaps twenty stalls, and by now I know most of the sellers by face, if not by name.
This week I bought greens for soup, a loaf of bread still warm from the oven, a small piece of cheese, and a bunch of flowers I had not planned to buy. The flowers were the best decision of the day. They sat on the table all week and made ordinary meals feel a little less ordinary.
Markets like this reward going slowly. If you rush through, you buy the same things as everywhere else. If you linger, you find the stall you would otherwise walk past.
