On a trip last month, the best meal was also the simplest: bread, cheese, fruit, bought that morning, eaten on a bench with a view. No restaurant, no reservation, no menu to study.

There is something about eating simply, outdoors, that makes food taste better. Perhaps it is the air, perhaps it is the lack of expectation. Whatever it is, I have stopped assuming that a better meal must be a more complicated one.

Since then I have tried to keep at least one meal a week that simple. It has not disappointed me yet.
